I feel fairly confident the Knicks will pursue Rockets PG Russell Westbrook on Friday. It just feels like the stars are aligning not to mention Rx just reported Wes is now following our rookie Obi Toppin on Twitter. Ouch!!!!
I didn’t want Chris Paul. I don’t want Danilo Gallinari (who is rumored to Atlanta) and I especially don’t want Russell Westbrook who is easily the most skilled of them all. He’s also the most self centered guy and hardly a personality I want Knicks young uns following but what I want never matters. I’d like to grow the current Knicks team as is and go the free agency route in 2022 with a strong young core of players that includes 3 or more star type talents and then add a superstar talent. But that scenario is likely a pipe dream because so far the rumor mill has been on point and the rumor mill states Thibs wants to win games now. Trading for Russell Westbrook certainly will help the Knicks win more games.
Westbrook gets what he craves which is a team of his own and media attention in Ameica’s largest media market. I just hope the cost is reasonable. I also hope some other team offers a better package for Westbrook.
So just trotting out some numbers Westbrook averaged 27 PPG, 8 RPG and 7 APG while shooting a career high 47% from the field and a near career low of just 26% from the 3 point line. While at OKC he registered 3 straight triple double years. The talent is extraordinary. So is the ego. o is the cost. Russ is signed for 3 more years and 130+ million dollars.
If the Knicks let Elfrid Payton go to free agency tomorrow and/or trade Dennis Smith, Jr. I think it fairly obvious Westbrook is the target. If he puts on a Knicks uniform I will love him unconditionally but this has a Melo vibe and I loved Melo. I didn’t love the cost nor the constant circus Melo seems to attract. Westbrook attracts the same circus like attention. But he is a superstar talent and maybe this all works out as there is no Kevin Durant, James Harden or Paul George to steal the spotlight from Westbrook. And after all NY has needed a PG forever.
The big question is will Houston take a Julius Randle/DSJ/Mavs pick package? I would not offer any more than that and there doesn’t seem to be any other suitors now that Charlotte has drafted LaMelo Ball. This should be an interesting week as every NBA team scrambles to assemble a roster before camp begins next week.
Thoughts?

I'm not sure that Westbrook helps the trio get any better. But if the talent sent out is minimal, then he does help you win more. I don't think I do it but that is probably just wrong if the deaL is what you mentioned.

I do not want Van Vleet@max. If WB is a salary dump than i would take him. We need a PG. He will be the man in NY, winning would be enough. Getting triple doubles and losing does him no good. I think Thibs and him would need to be on the same page to make it work. WB the facilitator would be incredible. WB chucking 3’s at 28% is not what we need.

I really don't want to give up any assets for him and would prefer they kick in an asset otherwise they can shove the 40 mil per with no fans in seats.

Its clear now that the Knicks will pursue a PG and I don't think Quickley is it. Westbrook from his UCLA days has always been able to get to the basket. The Knicks cleared $40M with the contract actions re. Taj, Peyton, Ellington, and Portis.
And if ego is a stopper than forget LeBron, the Nyets Bobbsey twins-Durant and Irving, Harden, and others. This would be Westbrook's team and he is, despite other faults, a competitor.

He is Gary but he wound so tight he blows up in key parts of critical games. He is not the leader we want here.He will be Melo 2 in iso ball.I can not see were his play won't affect the development of others. He might work but only Tibs can make the call I bet he wants him ,Tibs wants to win but at what expense is my point,I go back and forth.

Keep in mind Westbrook averages 7 assists so while he gets his, he passes very well from his penetrations too.

He would take the pressure off of everyone, getting them open looks. I think Leon will push this, if it only costs money. 3 years isn’t that long. We might even learn how to win.

I don't believe I can stomach watching Westbrook play and his effect on the so-called Knicks culture and development will be deleterious. If Rose ends up acquiring Westbrook, no matter the justification or premise, I think it's goodbye for me for a while, just like with the Allan Houston deal.

According to both Macri and Woj, the chances of getting Russell Westbrook are now slim and none. The Knicks want to be players in free agency every year, (according to Woj) and the Westbrook contract would take them out of the chase for the next three years. However your comments on the matter are still garbage. I root for the Knicks no matter who they have on the team. As for Westbrook, he’s an incredible player and an amazing athlete. He does so many things that nobody else can do, not LeBron, not Kawhi, not Luka, not Giannis, NOBODY!!! Is he a bit of a ball hog? Yeah. Does that get tiresome sometimes? Yeah. But for a fan to stop following his own team, is out and out ridiculous, and you are a fair weather fan of the worst degree. Go root for the Nets, you know you want to. Only player I hate watching is James Harden, because of the 23 seconds of dribbling followed by flopping followed by the parade to the foul line, but if the Knicks got him I’d root for him and them with all my heart. Can’t tolerate fake fans. Now I really want Westbrook!

I'm a Knicks fan but I'm also a fan of good basketball and I am fascinated by the year over year growth of a team with a coherent and sensible plan. Westbrook to the Knicks is antithetical to the latter, a hindrance. I also don't enjoy watching him play. On the blacktop there's a name or term for a player like Westbrook. Damned if I recall what it is but whatever it is, he is that. Take care and stay safe, rx.

I want to explore a trade for Alonso Ball since they just got Haynes and they have too many point guards
