Apparently the Knicks have made inquiries about Tracy McGrady who has one year and 23 million dollars left on his deal.
At the same time the Knicks maintain their interest in drafting Stephen Curry though it seems he likely will go before we pick at #8. The Knicks also seem interested in Arizona PF Jordan Hill too leaving even more possibilities.
The Knicks could keep their pick. They could use their pick and expiring contracts (Mobley is the bait here since his deal is 80% covered by insurance) to teams feeling a money pinch to trade up. Washington likes Hill a lot and they have the #5 pick so if the Knicks are truly enamored of Hill there is the opportunity to take him but it would be over Curry, Ricky Rubio and Hasheem Thabeet. There is also thinking that Thabeet may still be available at #8 making the deal sweeter for Memphis who wants and needs a big man.
Key in all this is the revelation that the Knicks cannot do a sign and trade with Lee or Robinson before July 9th making draft day deals involving them highly unlikely. A deal could be structured loosely but either side has 2 weeks to back out of it.
So Lee and to a lesser extent, Robinson, cannot be dealt till July 9th making a deal with them a little more interesting and possibly more complicated.
Back to TMac. Any deal with him is highly likely to involve Mobley's contract, a primo chip to be used on draft day, making the last week to draft day even that more interesting.
What will the Knicks do?
In short order they have expressed interest in 2 players on draft day who will not be available when they pick in Stephen Curry and Jordan Hill. Who do the Knicks covet more or is it all a ruse to draft somebody else?
If they pick 8th they have a great shot at PGs Jrue Holliday and Brandon Jennings. Big SGs DeRozan and Evans are likely to be available too. By trying to deal up for Hill, considered the second best PF prospect in the draft behind Griffin, that signals Lee is gone.
I can't believe they would trade valuable chips to get 1 year of TMac especially since he has proved his knees can't take the pounding of an NBA season. He missed 47 games this year, 16 last year and he just turned 30. If the deal got rid of Jefferies or Eddy Curry I could understand making the trade from our point of view but the Rockets don't need or want extra salary.
What should the Knicks do?
A lot is going on behind the scenes. I don't know how well Stephen Curry and Jordan Hill did during their private workouts with the Knicks. If we draft Hill what about Gallinari? Isn't he being groomed as a power forward? If we draft Curry we would have to make a choice between him, Rubio, Thabeet, Hill, and Harden if we get the #2 pick from Memphis. Is Stephen Curry the best player available behind Blake Griffin? He might well be the best player now but he is the best player 10 years from now? What is the plan?
I confess I don't know. From rumors to signing Marcin Gortat to a MLE, to TMac to who we will draft to keeping or trading Lee and Robinson all I can say is Donnie Walsh has a lot on his table right now. It should be very interesting to see where all this conjecture takes us.
