Who would have thunk it?
From the pits of despair to a 4 game win streak including last night in New Orleans. We start out letting the Hornets go 11-0 on us and then finish the game with the last 18 points in a 17 point win.
How?
Shooting good helps. We shot 55% from the field and 52% from behind the three point line. We won't shoot these gaudy numbers all the time or even most of the time but when we move the ball and look for the best shot opportunity good things happen. Beating New Orleans in New Orleans is not easy and especially for us. Chris Paul and David West kill us. Not last night.
Defense helps too. The Hornets were up by 9 at the half (and it would have been worse had Harrington not hit the halfcourt trey) and they had scored 62 points. We held them to 96 which means they got just 34 points in the second half and went from hitting over 50% in the first half to 40% fro the game from the field. If not for the huge discrepancy in fouls (NO shot 10 more than us at 25 to our 15 ) the game would have been more of a blowout win.
We ended the first half down by 6 rebounds and finished the game with a 47-41 margin on the boards. Lee had 14 boards and Gallo had 11 to go with his 3 assists, 12 points and 2 blocked shots. Last night might have been the best game he has played as a Knick.
It also helps when the PG has a good game. Duhon had 9 assists and ZERO turnovers to go with 22 points.
Surprisingly enough enough after 3 days off the Knicks get another 3 days off before playing Charlotte in Charlotte. The schedule makers have been kind.
We play on a fine margin of good and bad. We run a jump shooter's offense so when we don't hit jumpers we find it tough to win. We are horrid defensively yet we are getting better, What was once a 8 point deficiency between what we scored and what we allowed opponents to score is now down to 3 points and the opponent's FG %, still high at 48%, is nosing down too.
Teamwork and defense win games. Slowly we are learning this lesson. We are also seeing what happens when the rotation is right. The Knicks start Lee, Jefferies, either Gallo or Harrington, Chandler and Duhon. Either Gallo or Harrington is the first off the bench and then Hughes. We saw a little Curry and sometimes we see some Toney Douglas but by and large the rotation is 7 guys. As much as it pains me to say it Jared Jefferies contributes.
Right now we are playing well. The question is do we continue this lineup and philosophy or do we get the younger guys on the court, play Nate and Curry to showcase them for trades and keep developing the core nucleus of this team which is Gallo/Chandler/Lee/Hill/Douglas?
I'm happy but we are still 8-15.
