point guard: hughes or douglas
shooting guard: danilo gallinari
small forward: wilson chandler
power forward: david lee
center: darko milicic
milicic has to start for his defensive presence in the paint. aside from that he is a very good passer and d'antni needs good passers out there.
david lee has to start because though he is a lousy help defender and man on defender, he too is a good passer and his garbage buckets and rebounding are good enough for him to be a starter on this squad. besides, with milicic starting it covers up a multitude of david lee's defensive sins.
wilson chandler has to start because he is an okay if somewhat overrated defender but the key here is to put him at the position that best resmebles the skills he possesses, ie small forward. he is by no means a shooting guard because he is neither much of a shooter in terms of shot selection or accuracy from more than 18 feet out, and he is not a good enough passer. shots from either corner for 3s yes, but other than that he's got to be able to take it to the middle. what he is missing-- and i will say it again and again, is a little stop and pop in the lane off of two feet instead of these runners off one foot.
douglas or hughes at point guard: yes neither of them are really orchestrators but they both have enough defensive ability to warrant starting over duhon, who has been very disappointing. this leads to my final and most important point:
shooting guard danilo gallinari. why? well since we do not have an elite point guard like nash, williams, or paul we need to look at other players who have the ability to be the engine of the offense> look at boston for example-- is rondo an orchestrator? no not really but he is a helluva defender. no, the engine of the offense for the celtics is paul pierce, who i consider a top 5 player because he makes others around him better with his ball handling and playmaking.
take orlando last year: were their point guards the orchestrators that a classic point guard should be? no not really-- but hedo turkoglu was the engine of that offense and turkoglu is an underrated player too. he is a great shooter and playmaker and i believe carried that magic squad a whole bunch.
what i am saying is that when you lack an elite point guard from the offensive standpoint, you need another player who can be the engine of the offense while the point guard works on defending his man.
so far as worries about hughes or douglas bringing the ball up against presses, well they should be practicing that every chance they get.
but the fact of the matter is gallinari has the potential to be to the knicks what pierce is to the celtics and what turkoglu was to the magic last season before stupidly letting him go.
gallinari needs the opportunity to let his game expand and grow as quickly as possible. i think this lineup gives him the best chance to excel while making others around him better. he is the only knick who is capable of making others around him better. the fact that he is 6'10" is of no matter whatsoever.
