So does anyone think Kahn will still be around in 6 years to see his 5th pick play?

"Source: Rubio deal not done yetComment Email Print Share By Chris Sheridan
Although there remains a strong possibility that Ricky Rubio will play in Spain rather than Minneapolis next season, a Spanish media report Wednesday of his agreement to a six-year deal with FC Barcelona was overstated, a knowledgeable NBA source told ESPN.com.
The Spanish newspaper Marca said Regal FC Barcelona had agreed to pay Rubio's former team, DKV Joventut, 3.7 million Euros ($5.28 million U.S.) for the rights to the 18-year-old playmaker who was taken by the Minnesota Timberwolves with the fifth pick of June's NBA draft.
"Ricky Rubio hasn't signed anything. Joventut hasn't accepted anything. It's not over yet," said the source, who was briefed early Wednesday on the ever-changing landscape of the protracted, trans-Atlantic Rubio saga.
Rubio's current contract with Joventut includes a 5.7 million Euro ($8.133 million) buyout clause for both this summer and next summer. The buyout drops to zero in the summer of 2011, and Timberwolves general manager David Kahn, who has traveled to Spain this summer to negotiate with Joventut officials, has said the club is willing to wait until then for Rubio to come to the NBA.
"Based on the information I have attained today, no team in any league has reached a deal with DKV Joventut concerning Ricky's buyout, which must be accomplished before Ricky is released from his contract with DKV Joventut," Kahn said in a statement released by the Timberwolves early Wednesday afternoon.
Under the NBA collective bargaining agreement, Minnesota is allowed to contribute a maximum of $500,000 toward Rubio's buyout -- a rule that has opened the door for deep-pocketed European clubs, including FC Barcelona, to go after him.
According to the newspaper Marca, Rubio had agreed to a six-year contract with an "affordable" buyout in 2011 as part of a declining buyout scale, but ESPN.com's source said the Barcelona club appeared to be leaking the story to Marca in order to put pressure on Joventut to accept Barcelona's latest offer."

Smart move by Rubio and his advisors. It gives him 2 years above NBA rookie scale in pay, he gets stronger and better and the longer he waits the better his chances are that he can get Minnesota to trade him.

Kahn may be more clever than we think. He is offering an exhibition game overseas to sweeten the buyout pot. in addition He drafted a questionable talent (Henk Norel) in the second round from the same team. Does he also offer a 500K buyout for Norel (therefore basically paying $1 mil for Rubio)
