Knicks president Donnie Walsh announced today that free agent forward/center Chris Hunter has been signed to a contract. As per club policy, terms of the deal will not be disclosed. Hunter, a member of the Fort Wayne Mad Ants, became the 24th Call-Up of the 2008-09 NBA Development League season. Hunter, 6-11, 240-pounds, averaged 19.3 points, 9.4 rebounds and 1.2 blocks in 47 games with Fort Wayne this season.

I suppose the auditions are continuing, which is by no means a bad thing. Sorta makes it clear though, Donnie doesnt seem to be "banking" on the draft when it comes to a big man.

Will...
It definitely appears that Donnie is not fooling around when it comes to the Knicks getting a look at some big guys for the summer. I have a feeling that we will be seeing Sene, Sims, and Hunter when New York plays the Nets.
Perhaps what I am thinking is a tad pemature, but inking 3 centers in the span of a week doesn't exactly show management's confidence in Eddy Curry ever being able to play for the team. Maybe I am wrong, but Walsh and company seem to be sending some strong vibes about the Knicks need for a contributing player in the paint.

Excellent point about Walsh not banking on the draft for a big man. At #8 and with a slim chance of the Knicks getting a better pick via the ping-pong process, the chances of NY landing a high enough pick to secure Hasheem Thabeet are virtually nil, and perhaps Walsh isn't that nuts about Thabeet's potential in any event. This draft is rather thin, from what I've heard...

Walsh must have a thing for Michigan centers. ; ) Both Courtney Sims and Chris Hunter are Wolverines.
The skinny on Hunter is he is decently athletic. He's got a good faceup jumper which fits the "style" of the Knicks and he can board and block shots. He's 25 years old and has played well in the NBADL averaging 19 ppg and almost 10 rpg. He's played overseas too.
I think what Walsh is doing is racking and stacking big men for the summer. Sene is purely an athletic, defensive type player. Hunter is more an offensive center. Sims is somewhere in between. I don't think Donnie places a lot of faith in Curry's promise to be in shape and I think he knows he has to get Lee, if he keeps him, out of the pivot.
What the Knicks need is the next Ben Wallace. The guy doesn't have to score much as long as he hits the boards and defends the basket. Most important is he has to be a strong help defender. D'Antoni likes a center who can shoot too but after this season and the never ending layup line to our basket I think he makes an adjustment on his pivot philosophy. ; ) I'm no mindreader but Mike saw what we saw and he knows it has to stop.
BTW, maybe Walsh should stop looking at Michigan centers and concentrate on Virginia Union centers. Ben Wallace and Charles Oakley went to Virginia Union. ; )
