A little surprised at David Lee for publicly venting his frustration over the protracted talks. If anything, Lee should fire Mark Bartlestein, who effectively priced Lee out of the NBA market. As much as some folks love David, he is not a $10-$12,000,000 player. Apparently Donnie Walsh is prepared to give Lee a one year, $6,000,000 deal. This is the ugly side of sports and if truth be told, David has given his heart and soul, as well as double-doubles to the NY Knicks. Conversely, how many of these double-doubles have resulted in wins for the team?
I'm not surprised that the Chicago interest in a sign and trade for David Lee has surfaced in one of the NY papers. The Bulls can use a little stability and apparently they are also one of Carlos Boozer's preferred landing spots. So is NY. So what gives? Utah doesn't want another PF to replace Boozer since they have about 45 of them on the roster. Utah doesn't want an 80% insured contract in return for the $12,000,000 a year Boozer. What the hell does Utah want? Apparently nothing NY has, and maybe something Chicago has? Call me silly, but as soon as David signs the $6 million dollar one year deal, trade him straight up for Ty Thomas and a couple of million bucks. Ty becomes a restricted free agent next season with a qualifying offer of around...$6,000,000.
If Donnie Walsh is seriously thinking about Jamaal Tinsley, I am seriously thinking that Walsh has a psychogenic fugue regarding Stephon Marbury, who was paid $19,000,000 last season not to play for NY. Still, as I said before, basketball can be an ugly business and why not acquire the cheap Tinsely? After all, he is far less of a cap-killer than Stephon was, and brings that same level of unsavory flavor that cost the Knicks millions upon millions of dollars for what? The veteran's minimum?
Andre Miller seems to be going to Portland which must really getting to David Lee, since the Blazers weren't going to spend their $9,000,000 on a back-up PF.
Ramon Sessions is not quite a Knick, which is too bad. The Clippers will probably snatch him up for half the MLE for five years or Walsh will do the same. Bidding against yourself is not good, as evidenced by Allan Houston being overpaid by close to $30,000,000 his second time around. Again, Walsh does have power in almost every one of the aforementioned scenarios. But here's a thought. How much will Ramon really cost NY down the road at say $4.5 million a year when Nate is no longer a must-sign, Duhon drops off the cap at the end of this season, and you don't pay a nickel for Jamaal's transgressions and conditioning issues?
Is Walsh 1000% sure Utah doesn't want David Lee for Carlos Boozer?
Is Walsh 1000% sure he doesn't want David Lee. I find it very hard to believe that NY is offering Lee $8,000,000 per year for 4 years and Lee feels so snubbed by NY that he went public as he did. My guess is that the multi-year pact that Donnie is offering is more toward the $6.5 per annum figure than the widely reported $8,000,000 or even the $7,000,000. David would sign today if those deals were on the table.
Nate Robinson wants to be a Knick so bad that he is willing to accept $4-$5,000,000 for this year. Too bad, since my money is on the qualifying offer, if even that, especially if NY does Sessions for 3/4s of the MLE over 5 years. We have a new, cheaper Nate now, at least that is what the ugly side of basketball is telling me.
