Needless to say some profound changes were made on the Knicks. And ironically on the Nets.
Signing Rich Brunson, keeping Mitch Robinson and adding 24 year old center Isaiah Hartenstein pretty much takes care of all Knicks business outside of trades. In that regard Bradley Beal is off the table as he signs a supermax extension with the Wizards. I love when players show a little hometown loyalty. Unlike what is happening in Brooklyn reinforcing my long lost notion we dodged a nuclear missile in 2019.
Back to us. I don't think Brunson is a star player. I don't think he supplants Randle and RJ as the Knicks top 2 options. I do think Brunson can tie the Knicks together giving them someone who can run the team in pressure situations with just enough offensive pop of his own to create space which is also why the Knicks added Hartenstein from the Clippers. He's a 7' sharp shooting big who maximizes his time on the floor. His 22.06 PER (Performance Efficiency Rating) would have led the Knicks last season. Back to Brunson he is a very ordinary athlete and defender which gave rise to why the Knicks might have been interested in Dejounte Murray who is an exceptional 2 way player. Brunson is smart and he plays to strengths in his game which means positioning. It does help having a rim protector like Mitch.
Adding Brunson and Hartenstein and keeping Fournier certainly bolsters the Knicks 3 point shooting. You could make an excellent point the Knicks overpaid for Jalen Brunson but chemistry and intangibles matter on a team. I should note that while I am composing this post Adrian Wojnarski is reporting the Brunson deal isn't done and that he just left a meeting, reportedly canceled, with the Mavs and is now headed for a meeting with the Knicks. This could be a smokescreen to avoid possible tampering charges which reportedly the Mavs feel the Knicks did by hiring Jalen's dad to coach for them.
Nothing is easy for the Knicks.
Assuming Brunson does sign with the Knicks they have used all their cap money and most of their midlevel exception signing Brunson and Hartenstein. I feel a big trade is on the horizon but until that happens I give the Knicks a solid B or even B+ on their offseason so far.
Fingers crossed on Brunson.
