With the draft over, it is time for a scouting report on our newest Knick, Trevor Keels!!
First, I am ecstatic that we got him with our 2nd round pick. He is incredibly underrated. Ignore, his numbers, he has a lot of raw talent. At Duke, he was one of the team's better defenders and clutch scorers. He has a very good handle for a 2 guard. Duke used him as a backup point guard as a result. That being said, he is not a point.
He excels at scoring in the paint. He is a naturally large kid that is built like a safety. Basketball players just bounce off of him when he drives. He has excellent form on his jump shot but had a tendency to force 3 pointers at Duke, in part because he was Duke's best perimeter shooter.
Keels reminds me in many ways of Gary Trent, Jr. Keels, like Trent, carried too much weight at Duke. He needs to get in better physical shape. There were times last year when it looked like he wore down. If the Knicks are patient, I would expect him to blossom in two years. I would expect this year that he would spend more time in the G League, but be ready to contribute in his 2nd year and be ready to be a legit starter in his 3rd season.
His raw talent level is higher than Grimes, but I would expect Keels to be a better player when he reaches Grimes' age.
I personally think that we got a steal.

Better than Grimes? ESPN had Keels at 90 for their grading system. Grimes was a 94. Grimes was listed as the 8th best player in his class while Keels was #23. Grimes is a real good player and a steal in the draft. Hopefully Keels is too but right now today Grimes is the better player.

Grimes is a much better shooter and he is physically in better shape, but he is also 4 years older. What I am saying is that when Keels is 23, he will be a better player than Grimes was at 23.
I say that because Keels is a better ball handler and physically stronger. He needs to get in NBA level shape, improve his shot selection and be more consistent with the 3 pointers. Grimes is already a quality NBA 3 point shooter and defender. However, Grimes does not have a very good handle and has not shown the ability to consistently finish in the lane. It is easier to become a good shooter than it is to become a quality ball handler. That is why I think Keels has a higher upside.

I hope you are right brother though it should be mentioned Grimes is taller and a much better athlete. What a world when 22 is considered old but Keels at 18 does need an extended look and some time eating right and working out under professional guidance. I do have to say the clips of him I have watched do demonstrate extraordinary strength and a deft handle and his shot looks very good.
