The thread title sums up my feelings about Knicks basketball right now. To me this season is even worse than the horrific seasons of the past decade plus simply because I expected so much more based on last season when Knicks basketball was largely a joy to watch again. Instead of challenging for the playoffs we are challenging for the lottery. Never has the All-star break occurred at a better time because I'm sick of watching Knicks basketball.
The win at Golden State set me up for this massive fall from hope and optimism to utter depression. We beat one of the best teams in the NBA on their floor and then proceed to blow a 23 point lead against Portland, get beat in OT by the hapless Thunder MINUS their two best players and culminated our complete demolition with another blown big lead against the NBA team I hate the most MINUS their three best players in what I believe is the Knicks worst game of the season.
I felt the Knicks addressed their most pressing needs this summer. They re-upped Randle, Rose, Burks and Noel. I was happy with that though in retrospect a lot of fans, writers and analysts think letting Bullock go was a mistake. Certainly the Knicks miss his defense. I approved of the addition of Fournier and Walker. So did most of the pundits and most of this board. We had problems scoring and both Fournier and Walker could score and they could score off the dribble. I saw them taking the pressure off Randle who seemed poised for a monster season. I loved the rookies. I feel like the Knicks stole the draft. So what happened?
I don't think it is any one thing but rather a series of unfortunate events and bad moves. I'm still hesitant to lay the blame on management. Except for Thibodeau. I think it plain to see Tom has lost the team. Every stop of his coaching career the same thing happens. His teams love em' till they don't. You lose the locker room today and that is it. It's time to go. Now management is on the hot seat because they have to admit they made a mistake with Thibs and they have to make the commitment to rebuilding this team starting with playing the youngsters more and keeping those draft picks. Make deals this summer to either trade or release Walker and outright trade Randle and Fournier. IMHO RJ and Mitch are keepers but unless Randle reverts to his previous form, which could happen, he needs to go too while he still has value. In truth I am all right for trading anybody and every body if need be. That is how disgusted I am right now.
Replacing Thibs is the first priority. Finding an NBA PG has to be the next priority. How many games have the Knicks lost either in the first or fourth quarter because they lacked direction? Alec Burks is not an NBA PG. I like Rose but he's more a scoring guard than a PG and he's always dinged up. Even healthy Kemba Walker is mostly like Rose only his defense is far worse. The Knicks need to see what they have in Miles McBride. Can he run a playoff NBA team? Is he mostly a good backup PG? You see what he does in the G League and his play there shows he has talent. And attitude. Besides talent and youth the Knicks need an edge. Like last year when they grinded out win after win. Is this team hitting the gym after games like last year? If they are nobody is talking about it and that kinda of work ethic defined last year's team.
Fournier is expendable because of Quentin Grimes who has been one of the few bright spots in this dismal season. I think it plain to see IQ is expendable. While his Kentucky backcourt teammate Tyrese Maxey is having a breakout season for the Sixers, the kind of season I expected from IQ, Quickley's numbers have dropped even though he is getting more PT. He's just 22 but unless he has a massive remainder of the season I see no reason to play him over McBride or Grimes.
I'm on the fence about Obi Toppin who shows flashes of great play followed by stretches where you don't know he is on the floor. One thing for sure is he needs to work on his 3 point shot this off season. I think he can be a good NBA PF and he has physical ability and some skills but if the Knicks trade Randle can Obi be a full-time NBA PF? Right now he isn't that guy. He could be and while we are at it the Knicks need to bring Luka Šamanić up and let him show his stuff. I don't know if he is healthy yet but when he played in the G League he tore it up. Of course he only played 7 games so if he has congenital physical issues find out now and let him go. If not he has shown some inside/outside NBA level ability.
I can live with the Knicks shaving salary and getting more youngsters. I like the Cam Reddish deal. I like RJ, Grimes, McBride, Sims, Obi and Mitch. I don't see a superstar in any of these players and that is the problem so the solution is a coach willing to play and develop youngsters and a management team willing to be patient with their money while drafting more talent for this team. Unless a miracle happens the Knicks look like they will have to sign their superstar(s) through trade or free agency but till then it'd the same old mantra. Develop, develop, develop. Maybe we are cursed considering we might have a Steph Curry on the Knicks or a Ja Morant had fortune favored us. But we didn't and I can live with that as long as the team plays hard and plays together. For FOUR quarters.

I agree with everything you’ve written. Your post title is totally accurate and describes my feelings exactly. Injuries have been a problem this season. But the number one problem has been the coach. His use of players, rotations, and strategies backfire every game. Does he ever coach on the sidelines without that angry expression on his face. How many 48 minute team efforts does he get from the roster. Poor IQ when playing as the PG runs around like Rory Sparrow. No wonder he forgets how to shoot 4 out of five games. I’m sorry but I can’t write anymore. I’m going to be 77 years old in April and I don’t think I’ll live long enough to see the name Knicks and the word championship used in the same sentence. It’s time for the baseball players and owners to settle on a contract. Let’s Go Mets !!!

I know many of my fellow Knicks fans don't want to hear that, but as I have always maintained: the fish rots from the head down. I really don't see any hope at this point, so long as Dolan is there. Maybe that is what you yourself are implying. It would take a miracle to become a true contender at this juncture. I mean like a Jordan Magic Bird Olajuwon draft miracle. That is to say: the draft is the only way. The present regime has actually done above average as drafters, as you have demonstrated. So I am going to say something heretical: I want the Knicks to tank and tank hard. And maybe tank hard next year too. I would keep the guys you yourself mentioned and prioritize trading all the Fool's Gold for draft picks the next two or three drafts. Yes the coach has got to go-- I was not a fan of this hire, and questioned it from the beginning. Didn't like the reliance on vets and the absurd minutes he played vets. This has always been his M.O. He has no business coaching a rebuild, which is exactly what he was stepping into. WTF. We needed a Popovich or Ettorio Messina or any coach who was first and foremost an educator-type coach. Not just a leader but a teacher. Obviously Popoviches don't grow on trees (neither do Duncans) but a leader/educator coach is always always paramount, vital. Who gets to final decision on said coach on the Knicks at this point?? Dolan or Rose? Either one, he made a big mistake. And it is very very very worrisome that Rose's biggest move was extending Randle. It looks like Randle was playing for a contract after all is said and done. Main thing is that Thibodeau has been ridiculously lenient with Randle instead of holding him accountable for his regression. To be fair to this Coach: swapping defense for offense last summer was a cardinal sin. You mention the pundits here in favor of acquiring Walker and Fournier. I must not have been one of those pundits, then, because I pointed out immediately the very similar NET WIN SHARES between the two pairs of Bullock-Payton and Walker/Fournier. I stated at the time it seemed like "robbing Peter to pay Paul." And they have been nothing short of an abomination. So BOO to Leon Rose and company for this bullshit lateral move. This, added to the Randle misjudgment, should be absolutely sobering if not soul crushing. It's a given that Thibs is gone. Whoever the Knicks eventually hire on as coach-- and by God, short of Ettore Messina, he had better be an African-American from the Popovich coaching tree-- has got to have input into the draft choices. As a business owner I cannot stress enough how important it is to vet for character in hiring practices. And in order to be a good judge of character one has to be of oneself of good character. Hence if there are weak links in the chain among management then success will simply not be possible. Are Leon Rose and his management team ALL men and women of good character? And, of course, Dolan would have to be completely out of the picture. How realistic is that, so long as Dolan is the one who is hiring all below him in management??? At this point I cannot help but ask my fellow Knicks fans to read the very short article connected to this jump to see why our franchise is cursed. It is both factual and sobering: clutchpoints.com/how-james-dolan-got-the-new-york-knicks/. At the end of the day: who the fuck are Leon Rose, World Wide Wes, Steve Stout and who hired these cats??? SELL THE TEAM.

Kenny Atkinson is getting some traction as maybe a future Knicks coach but I still like Kenny Smith. Brilliant basketball mind mentored by some HOF coaches, a native New Yorker and a guy who can relate to players.

Brilliant basketball mind mentored by some HOF coaches, a native New Yorker and a guy who can relate to players. But Bill he owns the team. He is the person ultimately responsible for the Knicks, from president on down. So, once again, the poor slob seems to be a magnet for pretenders and incompetents. The Rangers haven't won a single Stanley Cup since 1993-1994, long before the Dolan regime took over. They have had two decent seasons since then. All other seasons have been mediocre or just plain bad. Better than the Knicks in the same span and not a laughingstock the Knicks have been. I am gratified you have shifted ever so slightly towards seeing Dolan for the utter loser he is and certainly proven himself to be. And yet somehow I remain a Knicks fan. I doubt that Atkinson would come here although he is certainly qualified. However: I seem to recall he was shat upon the last go round at MSG. Who in their right mind would want to come back here after being shat upon?

I'm loath to open this can of worms again but Dolan sells the team and then what? Magically everything is all right? Stan Kroneke is a complete and utter ass and he just won a Super Bowl. Robert Sarver may be an even worse NBA owner than Dolan and his Suns have the best record in the NBA. I have always felt Dolan is a jerk and a tool but he isn't alone.
I'm not sure I know the story on Atkinson so enlighten me.

I'm not sure I know the story on Atkinson so enlighten me. Atkinson came in with Walsh and D'Antoni in 2008. He was swept away with D'Antoni's resignation and Walsh's retirement both due to the infamous trade for Carmelo Anthony. You may recall that the Knicks were trending towards a 6th-8th seed in the playoffs that season when they were 28-26 when Dolan stepped in to close the deal on Melo when his GM Donnie Wash balked at the price tag. Walsh's mantra was always "a player is good at one price and not good at another." Sage advice that the great Leon Rose should have followed with the Randle contract. One good season does not a great career make, and my guess here is that a smart and savvy basketball lifer like Walsh looked at Randle with his gimlet eye he would have thought there'd b a regression to the mean. Anyhoo Bill-- Dolan closed the Anthony deal and the subsequent fallout was that Atkinson was gone. So, yeah, Dolan shat upon him.

I havent posted because I have also been disgusted dejected and depressed. And disillusioned. In addition I've had nothing of value to add. But that has never stopped me before so here goes. I dont at all believe that Dolan is this problem. Thibs some, but quite a ways down my list. My view of problems goes like this A) Julius. Last year he was exceptional. This year good. Along with poorer shooting his fundamentals have been unsatisfactory. Waits too long for traps to envelop him and get caught in the air far to often. Last year he had 4th quarters comparable to Giannis. This season more like Thanasis.
B) Derrick Rose. He made the 2nd unit as good as just about any 2nd unit in the league. Every member of that unit is down from last year. And he didn't have to dribble all day to do it. Much better ball movement.
C) An extension of B but point guard play. IQ can throw a lob but damn he dribbles aimlessly more than Randle. If Kyrie and White chocolate Jason williams had a child he wouldnt dribble as much as IQ. Phil Ford running the 4 corners at UNC didnt dribble as much as IQ. Some knicks head back on defense when IQ goes into his McDribbles Jr act. And Burks is as much a point guard as Tom Brady is a shutdown corner. I havent went through all the rosters but I cant believe any team has poorer PG play

I definitely think Thibs is a huge part of the problem. Without Derrick Rose he seems lost in his decision making. It's been painfully obvious to the Knicks Nation that PG is a significant issue with the Knicks losing games in the 4th quarter. Thibs was one of the main supporters of drafting Miles McBride and on the surface Miles seems like the perfect Thibs guy. He's tough as nails. He is smart, athletic and skilled. He plays defense like a junk yard dog. You can't even make the point that as a rookie Thibs doesn't trust him because he's giving minutes to his rookies all during his tenure in New York. You play Grimes and Sims when the Knicks have plenty of wing players and are deep at center and you sit McBride after losing Rose and benching Kemba Walker? WTF?
I don't know if McBride is a quality NBA starting PG but I'd sure like to give him a chance since the Knicks are out of playoff contention and it's obvious Burks and IQ aren't working out. And what's up with Luka Samanic? You hear the guy is tearing up the G League and I know he's been injured but not word one on where he is or what is going on.
As for Randle I am bumfuzzled over his performance this year but let's throw in the fact virtually every Knick not named Robinson, Obi or Nerlens is shooting below the 45% Mendoza Line of FG%. The Knicks are right at the Mendoza Line for free throws (just below 75%) and 3 point FG% (35%). How does a team collectively shoot so bad? No Point Guard.

Obviously you and I will never ever agree on Dolan's culpability. Regardless, this is what I see: Leon Rose & Co. has drafted well. If you draft well then you need to have a coach who prefers to develop talent as quickly as possible. In which case Thibs needs to go. Bad hire. Randle was overpaid in the end, i.e. sunk cost to Dolan but Randle is in fact Rose's blunder. I have never witnessed such a precipitous fall to the mean in Julius Randle, and then some. This is a very bad look for Rose but a trade is a necessary move regardless. May Leo Rose & Co. continue to draft well, however! We need a coach who is capable of developing players and instilling teamwork. I wonder who is on the Popovich tree out there. Draft well, hire a Pop tree dude, and create the foundation that will attract elite players. If I see zero interference from Dolan in the next three seasons and the Knicks become truly, truly relevant and promising then okay. But if not, that's all she wrote for me. The team is cursed so long as he's there. But then I'll come back when Dolan is dead.

I feel your pain, Bill. I maintain it ultimately traces back to ownership, i.e. Dolan. It's not Dolan. He isn't playing the games. He isn't coaching the team. He isn't putting together the team. He's doing what he does with the Rangers and they are having a great season. I won't be unhappy when Dolan sells the team but right now it's on management, it's on the coaches and it's on the players. The only solace I get its that the Lakers with their superstars aren't doing much better than our Knicks.
Kenny Atkinson is getting some traction as maybe a future Knicks coach but I still like Kenny Smith. Brilliant basketball mind mentored by some HOF coaches, a native New Yorker and a guy who can relate to players.

Bill,
Agreed 100% on Kenny Smith, whom Ive advocated for years for the Knicks to bring into Management. I would like to add Greg Anthony in as well. Both guys are extremely bright, relatable to current players and would do a much better job than the current failing regime. My dear friend and Mother of Malik Allen (assistant coach with the Heat)took me as a guest to the Knicks-Heat game two Fridays ago. We had great seats and I had a chance to see up close just what is going on. RJ had the game of his life and is a definite keeper. Mitch worked very hard on the boards and I'd like to see him stay, provided a big man coachis brought in to coach/mentor Mitch. Grimes got hurt, however I believe he and Deuce are part of the future. Julius was outplayed by PJ Tucker and his mental state is definitely awful, compared to last year. I saw a definite lack of consistent defensive intensity, it wanes from minute to minute and that is where I feel Thibs is tuned out this year. So moving forward, I would try and get the younger players time, especially Grimes and Deuce. Ive seen enough of Alec Burks, who I like, but why he's put at the point is beyond puzzling. I think in the off-season Julius needs to be moved and I believe the Knicks will sign Brunson of the Mavs. I told Tracey during the game to not get nervous when the Knicks made a comeback. I said it never lasts through the 4th quarters and true to form, it did not on the Friday evening. The best part of the game was the Garden recognizing Clyde's, HOF honor in broadcasting. The cameras focused in on Clyde for about 30 seconds, he looks fantastic for 77 years of age (as of March 29th).

I coveted him (along with Jason) ever since he was drafted. I like Burks a lot. I like scrappy players like him, but his problem is he is a terrible shooter and your combo guard has to be able to shoot better than 38%. His midrange--and-in shooting is just plain bad. I like him but he's taking away minutes from Grimes and McBride. Mitch is also a keeper. Great floor impact on both ends of the court. Mitch, Brunson, RJ Barrett, Grimes, Toppin, McBride. That's a promising core.
