Randle played better but though the numbers are gaudy they're also deceptive in that he functioned as an efficient scorer only and not as a playmaker. Good news is he shot far more efficiently than Melo even on a good day. But, like Melo, three assists isn't going to cut it if the entire offense has only 16 assists for the game. And those bloody turnovers. Randle had five alone, and of course it can only be from overdribbling and crappy passing. Too much one on one by Randle and everyone else. It started off with him trying to establish himself as an unstoppable offensive force but at what cost??
Where is the offense??? The Knicks are not playing beautiful basketball. Sixteen assists and 13 turnovers last night. FG 42% yikes, 52%TS double yikes.
Fournier looks lost and lacking in confidence. Breen or Haarlow quoted Fournier as saying he isn't used to getting less than starter's minutes and he's having a hard time getting into the game. I say bench him for Burkes. Then he'll cherish every minute he gets to play unless he goes the Marbury disgruntlement route. He needs to drive and get to the line. He needs to up his playmaking and garner more assists. In my opinion he is one of the casualties when Randle tries to play hero ball.
Walker doesn't look like he's playing with any kind of joy either. It's 17 games in and I still don't see a semblance of an orchestrator. And taking charges is not really good defense, not when you're 5'10" and 180 pounds.
Thibs is already doing the switcheroo minutes wise, so although Fournier and Walker are starting the game, Burks and Rose got closer to starters minutes last night.
Defense? Obviously the Knicks will always miss Mitch, and we knew going into this season that the Knicks record would be the worse for it for every game he misses. Mitch's availability is key to the success of the Knicks. I said something similar about Walker but this is different: I do not agree with his not playing back to backs. He should play every game if only to have more opportunity to help create a cohesive offense, but that's tough to do with a "scoring point guard."
I like what I am seeing from Toppin more and more. RJ is my guy, and though he shot poorly, he snatched 15 boards (only one offensive though) and played the best defense of any Knick by far. He was coached well in college but if the Knicks fail to play as a team on offense then RJ will eventually suffer.
Who is responsible for the offense on this team?
