Sumanic's draft profile has him at 6'11, 233 lbs with above average skills and athletic ability. He's a smart lad and just 21 so why did San Antonio cut him before they really had to cut him?
His motor. Apparently Luka quit halfway on a play against Orlando and that was it as far as Pops and the Spurs were concerned. It was really the only issue the Spurs had with the kid. They liked his game. They even liked him but whether it was a case of just being uncomfortable playing in the NBA or a severe case of Eurotitlement enough was enough.
This is no great coup for the Knicks... yet... but 21 year old 6'11 wingmen with perimeter skills and hops are at the very least intriguing and it costs the Knicks next to nothing to see if the Croatian has what it takes to be a Knick. One thing for sure. He will get motivated or he will be on a plane back to the Euroleague.

Thibs is about as no nonsense as Pops is so we'll see.
