Did y'all notice that virtually EVERYTHING about the Knicks has changed? Where once scorned we are now praised. By EVERYONE. As a NBA League Pass subscriber I hear what the other announcers say about our team and lately they ALL say very, very good things. We have gone from being an automatic "W" to one of the tougher games our opponents will play. Where once we defended badly and shot even worse the Knicks have become one of the top 3 and D teams in the league. The Knicks were rated the best team in the whole league in April. The BEST.
WTF??
I'm watching a third quarter sequence from last night's game against Houston. Randle has an open 3 at the top of the key but he kicks it out to an equally open Derrick Rose on the wing who then immediately kicks the ball out to Reggie Bullock in the corner where he nails the shot. Boom. Boom. BIG boom!! No hesitation by anybody. Then the Knicks have 2 straight sequences where their swarming defense just mystifies the Rockets into a 24 second violation and a very bad shot. This is OUR team. They play together. They work hard. They are enthusiastic and they push each other. Every game I feel like I notice something new or something improved by this team. On paper they seem overmatched against a lot of teams but on the court their teamwork, as I illustrated above, seems to over shadow their weaknesses as a basketball team.
I know the next 5 games are very important. But we have gone from a wish and a hope to almost even odds to beat the best of the West on their own floors. We might not but it wouldn't surprise me if we did. Iggy made a very astute observation on a Facebook Knicks forum about just being competitive against some of the best teams in the league. But as I reflect on it that sort of justification doesn't work for me any more. I know all the flaws of this basketball team yet I expect more than just competitive. I expect them to win and maybe that isn't fair right now but the Knicks are getting better and better seemingly every game. THEY expect to win every time they step on the floor. Who am I to disagree with them?
BTW, a shout out to Trend who astutely noted in another thread that NOBODY wants to play the New York Knicks. Let me add they will be a better team next season. And the season after that and so on. I think the long nightmare is over and after almost two decades deep inside the tunnel of utter despair the New York Knickerbockers have FINALLY found the light!
