In all seriousness, Roy Williams was a truly great coach who absolutely deserves his HOF status. The academic cheating scandal was not really his fault, although he benefited from it. I will always hate him for his role in the Barnes recruiting issue, but I have nothing but respect for his coaching acumen. I truly hope that Roy enjoys his well deserved retirement.

I never thought Williams was that great of a coach. It seemed that coach K would often out coach him late in games even if Carolina had slightly better talent. And Duke's players seemed more comfortable late in those rivalry games.

And Duke's players seemed more comfortable late in those rivalry games. Roy was not a great in-game coach in terms of making adjustments. But, he was an amazing coach in terms of improving his talent over time by stressing fundamentals and getting his players to play his system. Yes, Coach K did routinely outcoach Roy in games because K always coaches to the moment as opposed to a system. So, K would exploit weaknesses on UNC whereas Roy would rely on his system to overwhelm teams. To his credit, it is a really effective system akin to the old D'Antoni 7 seconds or less system of beating opponents down the floor and using superior size to crush opponents on the glass. It does need a really good point guard to work properly though.

I'm not a Williams fan. In 1998 Billy Donovan and Florida were recruiting 5 star McDonald's All American Mike Miller out of South Dakota. Billy was 2 years into his coaching career at Florida and he along with Williams, who was at Kansas then, were after Miller. Miller just liked Donovan and Gainesville more and he selected the Gators over the Jayhawks which set Williams off into a full blown hissy fit that a football school could get a blue chip basketball player. A lot of veiled accusations about Donovan's character were fired off from Williams and his buddy Bill Self until finally Williams was forced to issue an apology to Donovan.
It turns out while Miller really liked Donovan and Gainesville, and he was not the usual jock type, he meet a University of Florida coed during one of his visits who later became his wife.
Williams showed his ass back then and as everybody knows I never forget and seldom forgive.
