Iβd blame UNC and their coaches who probably told Barnes to lie to Duke. How could that be worse than what Rivers (thankfully gone) did to Florida? Bill, Rivers left you enough time to go get Bradley Beal in his place once he decided to go back on his verbal. IMHO, Florida came out ahead. Barnes did it intentionally to hurt Duke. IMHO, I don't care who told him to do it. As far as I know, he is the ONLY recruit to have ever done that to Duke. So, I don't care if it was his parents or Roy Williams. Barnes showed a complete lack of character. It was not that he changed his mind like Rivers did to Florida or Kris Humphries did to Duke. Barnes intentionally tried to hurt Duke. That is what makes the difference.
So, if the Knicks acquired him, I would root him to do well for the Knicks and feel a little dirty afterward like I did when rooting for A-Rod on the Yankees.
I guess it's a matter of perspective though Rivers and Beal were supposed to be the Gators backcourt. What Rivers did, badmouthing Florida because they didn't "show him enough love", is really revealing as a character flaw. I don't mind that he went to Duke. I love Donovan and I love the Rowdy Reptiles but neither compares to Coach K and the Cameron Crazies. I didn't like him rationalizing his decision by throwing Florida under the bus. Barnes was a kid doing what adults told him to do. I dislike Roy Williams intensely so issue Barnes a pardon and prosecute the real culprit.

Bill, what is funny is that from what I heard, Beal did not want to play with Rivers. Duke was recruiting Beal and the Duke insiders felt pretty good about their chances until Rivers became available. Essentially, if Rivers went to Duke, Beal was not going to go to Duke. Duke chose Rivers. So, I doubt that Florida was getting both since Beal did not want to play with Rivers.
BTW, Rivers was also a stupid 17 year old kid when he said those things about Florida. Even still, he was not trying to harm Florida's future. He was just trying to justify going back on his verbal. Barnes really did try to and did hurt Duke that year.

DA, what is up with Barnes? What caused the hate? Since you all asked, Barnes was the top recruit his year coming out of high school and all of the top schools wanted him. He decided about 6 weeks before he announced that he was going to UNC. However, he told Duke that he had chosen them. So Duke naturally stopped recruiting other scoring wings. I don't really care if a player choose UNC, that is their choice, but to deliberately sandbag another school to hurt their recruiting makes him a duplicitous piece of shit that does not deserve any respect from me.
I get that. But what if a school holds a running back on hold but drops him from their recruiting when a perceived better player accepts?

I don't fault you for your deep love for all things Duke but you're talking about what a then kid did and most likely his parents and/or handlers made him do. That was how long ago? He's a grown man with a family of his own now. I guess I'm glad we're fans and not front office people because if our personal grudges got in the way of business, we'd never be able to put together a winning roster. Thanks again for sharing but I'm sure this actually happens more than you know. A person is entitled to change their mind no?? Barnes paid for the funeral of an innocent young woman that was killed by a policeman while playing a videogame in her own house. To me that outweighs leaving Duke at the altar as a teenager

Never heard that and I have decent sources inside the Florida program. Either way it doesn't influence my opinion and I should add that with Doc Rivers as his Dad and his sister Callie a Gator volleyball player I can't make his age much of an excuse. But that's me. At 17 I was a total and complete asshat.

I feel the most important deal today was Toronto trading Terence Davis to the kings for a second round pick. The same bumass Terence Davis that made 2nd team all rookie instead of RJ BARRETT. Great trade.

I get that. But what if a school holds a running back on hold but drops him from their recruiting when a perceived better player accepts? It depends on how the coach approaches it with the recruit. There are plenty of coaches who tell players that I have one spot and the first one to sign the letter of intent gets the spot. But, if the coach lies to the recruit, that is wrong because that could hurt the recruit.

I just remembered a situation that happened with Duke Football where it did not generate any hate for the player. Chazz Surratt originally gave a verbal to Duke to play QB but reneged when he decided to go to UNC of all places. He did the right thing and told Coach Cutcliffe that he changed his mind so that Duke could use that scholarship slot for another player, who happened to be Daniel Jones. Surratt is now a redshirt senior LB in this year's NFL draft. If he had done what Barnes did, then Jones does not get that scholarship to Duke and he might not have gotten the chance to be an NFL player. So, no hate for Surratt. It all worked out fine for everyone.
I hate the intentional attempt to sabotage another school which affects other players, not just the school. IMHO, it is an unforgivable sin in sports. Just like I will not forgive the Astros for their cheating in 2017-19.
