Next Thursday on March 25th at 3PM is the NBA trade deadline. Will the Knicks be a major player in the trade market? A minor player? A player at all?
There have been a number of players linked to the Knicks. Victor Oladipo. Myles Turner. Lonzo Ball. Andre Drummond. Kyle Lowry. These guys are the usual suspects in most trade conjecture. Bradley Beal, Harrison Barnes, Terry Rozier, Eric Bledsoe, Zach LaVine, and others have been mentioned. LaMarcus Aldridge and DeMarcus Cousins are still out there.
The Knicks situation is simple. They have multiple assets to use in any trade including their own players and a bushel full of draft picks including two first rounders from Dallas and a mess of second rounders. The Knicks are also 15+ million under the cap making a trade far easier especially if the trade partner is trying to shed salary which has become a major factor in trade discussions due to the financial hit taken by all NBA teams during the Pandemic. Simply put our Knicks can be major players in the market. They have all the chips.
The Knicks are currently 6th in the East at 21 and 21 and a half game ahead of the surging Charlotte Hornets. It is expected Mitchell Robinson can play today leaving guards Derrick Rose and Austin Rivers as the only non-available Knicks now though Rose should be back soon.
The Knicks are the NBA's best defensive team. They are the 28th ranked offense. Their needs are simple. Long term they need a superstar scorer. Beal and Brandon Ingram are my favorite choices right now but neither is available. More immediately they need more offense.
I don't believe a major star will be moved. I'm not a fan of acquiring Oladipo because he's a pending free agent therefore he might end up an expensive rental for a fringe playoff team. This is a trade Phil Jackson would have pulled the trigger on faster than he could take a nap. Don't be like Fill, Leon!! Oladipo is injured a lot and those injuries have taken the edge off Oladipo. He can score and play defense but he's an average shooter who depends on elite athleticism that like Derrick Rose doesn't exist any more. Now factor in Houston wants a mint for him and my advice to Knicks management is don't take any calls from area code 281.
Another popular name is Andre Drummond. This is startling but Drummond's current PER is higher than any current Knick including Randle. SMH. Drummond currently averages 17.5 PPG and 13.5 RPG. He shoots 48% from the field but he has no range and he's elevated his free throw shooting from terrible to bad. On defense he's a Enes Kanter type sieve. He can certainly rebound and he can certainly score in the box but I question his fit with the team attitude wise and on the floor his style would get in the way of Randle's. The cost is cheap. The need just isn't there.
Oladipo and Drummond are the two players mentioned the most but others are on the radar including a guy who piqued my interest. Norman Powell of the Raptors. He's an undersized (6'3) SF currently averaging almost 20 PPG while shooting 50% from the field and 45% from beyond the three point line. He's 27, uber athletic and he plays both ends of the floor. Few teams have been hit by the pandemic harder than Toronto. They are currently 17th in payroll and they have high priced players like Pascal Siakam, Fred Van Fleet and OG Anunoby. Powell has a 11 million player option this summer and while Kyle Lowry is on an expiring deal the payroll is still high for a team that gets no arena revenue.
Off the top of my head Kevin Knox or Reggie Bullock and the Dallas first rounder gets it done. Powell is an explosive scorer who can create his own offense. He's a team guy. He can shoot efficiently and he's coming off a 43 point game versus Detroit on St. Paddy's Day.
A guy like Powell gets the Knicks in the playoffs.
So does Harrison Barnes. Like Toronto the Kings are bleeding money and they have made a number of players like Nemaja Bjelica and Jabari Parker available. I want Barnes. He's a 6'8 natural SF averaging almost 17 PPG on 50% shooting from the field and 38% behind the line. He is 28 with 2 very affordable years on his deal. He grabs 6 boards a game and almost 4 assists while playing both ends of the court. The cost will be higher though not by all that much. I imagine a similar deal to the Toronto one keeping in mind Bullock is a free agent this summer but also some second rounders including the Detroit pick this draft which is almost like a first round pick.
Who do you want? The point has been raised how tight this team is and how young they are with players that just might be what the Knicks need if they are patient and develop them. Even with a guy like Barnes or Powell the Knicks aren't championship contenders. Yet. Standing pat may be the smart move. But the Knicks are also in position to pull off almost any trade being offered out there. Chemistry is important. What should the Knicks do?

I am of the mindset that we are developing this team the right way without shortcuts. While I personally dislike Barnes, he would be a good fit in that he does play defense and can knock down an open 3. However, I do think he is overrated and way overpaid.
That being said, for the right price, I would trade for Barnes, it all comes down to value.

Hi Bill,
Thorough analysis as always. Well thought out and I agree with most of your thoughts. I love the idea of Harrison Barnes and Powell. I like the long term thought of Lonzo Ball as well for distributing and defensive purposes.

I like Powell. I don't see why Toronto would trade him. Post Kyle Lowery era, I can easily see Powell starting with VanVlett. I would not mind Drummond. Cost to rent and observe would be minimal. He would get in Randle's way BUT Robinson and Noel provide even less spacing.

Toronto would trade Powell to save money. They would need to get youth and/or draft picks back but the main reason is to cut payroll. Lots of trades that don't make basketball sense make financial sense especially now that the pandemic has opened up a lot of red ink for all the franchises but especially the smaller market teams. The Raptors are paying big money to Siakam, Van Fleet and Anunoby with Boucher becoming an unrestricted free agent in two years. They want to extend him this summer. Norman Powell is available for the right price and the Knicks don't have to salary match. They could make it a pick or two.
Harrison Barnes is a former Tarheel. I get it. But he helps the Knicks a lot and they can afford him. Sacramento is in the same boat as Toronto so Frank and a pick could get it done.
There are two schools of thought on Lonzo Ball which have to be determined before you go after him. One is he makes all the other Knicks better on offense therefore the team scores more which is their pressing need. I can't disagree with that assessment. His numbers look good especially his shooting numbers. The other opinion is the numbers are an aberration. Personally I don't think so but as always in the background is his big mouth father. After Kristaps and his brother I'm over big mouth relatives who think they should have a seat at the managerial table.
Of course if the Knicks really want the guy why not wait till he is a free agent this summer? He is a restricted free agent but the prevailing opinion is New Orleans won't match a high offer and since the Knicks have cap room they can make him a high offer.

Barnes is not just any Tar Heel, he is a duplicitous piece of shit whose word cannot be trusted. I have advocated for many for UNC players for the Knicks because college is not the pros, but I have more animosity toward Barnes than you do toward Austin Rivers.

DA, what is up with Barnes? What caused the hate? I'm kinda curious too as it would take a great hate to eclipse my dislike of the pre-Knicks Austin Rivers.

DA, what is up with Barnes? What caused the hate? Since you all asked, Barnes was the top recruit his year coming out of high school and all of the top schools wanted him. He decided about 6 weeks before he announced that he was going to UNC. However, he told Duke that he had chosen them. So Duke naturally stopped recruiting other scoring wings. I don't really care if a player choose UNC, that is their choice, but to deliberately sandbag another school to hurt their recruiting makes him a duplicitous piece of shit that does not deserve any respect from me.

I’d blame UNC and their coaches who probably told Barnes to lie to Duke. How could that be worse than what Rivers (thankfully gone) did to Florida?

I don't fault you for your deep love for all things Duke but you're talking about what a then kid did and most likely his parents and/or handlers made him do. That was how long ago? He's a grown man with a family of his own now. I guess I'm glad we're fans and not front office people because if our personal grudges got in the way of business, we'd never be able to put together a winning roster. Thanks again for sharing but I'm sure this actually happens more than you know. A person is entitled to change their mind no??

I wont blame it on him, I blame it on his parent/s. You dont do that, common courtesy especially when you are getting a free ride. Didnt Deandre do that with Cuban? just not a good look. BTW, Barnes turned out to be a role player, i haven no hard feelings.

I’d blame UNC and their coaches who probably told Barnes to lie to Duke. How could that be worse than what Rivers (thankfully gone) did to Florida? Bill, Rivers left you enough time to go get Bradley Beal in his place once he decided to go back on his verbal. IMHO, Florida came out ahead. Barnes did it intentionally to hurt Duke. IMHO, I don't care who told him to do it. As far as I know, he is the ONLY recruit to have ever done that to Duke. So, I don't care if it was his parents or Roy Williams. Barnes showed a complete lack of character. It was not that he changed his mind like Rivers did to Florida or Kris Humphries did to Duke. Barnes intentionally tried to hurt Duke. That is what makes the difference.
So, if the Knicks acquired him, I would root him to do well for the Knicks and feel a little dirty afterward like I did when rooting for A-Rod on the Yankees.

Jason, if it was Barnes just changing his mind, then I would forgive him. Kris Humphries committed to Duke and after his senior year of high school was over, he asked Coach K to release him from his commitment so that he could play closer to home. That hurt Duke, but it was understandable.
Barnes never had any intention of going to Duke. He wanted to sandbag Duke to hurt their recruiting class. Duke was coming off a national championship and had Kyrie as the new point guard and we needed a scoring wing to repeat. Barnes's behavior probably cost Duke a title.
