RJ has worked on his body and i can sense he is a floor impact guy. He looks focussed. I really like what I'm seeing. Speaking of floor impact, what team would not want Malcolm frickin' Brogdon-- Milwaukee FO blew it. 50/40/90 Glue Guy who defends the position. Character too. Turner looks a bit chunky for a 24 year old dude. Sabonis is a beast. So funny how much more athletic he is than his father, although his father was an old player when he came to the NBA. Clyde calling Sabonis' baby hook "anachronism." Randle suuuuckks. Quickly looks short with long arms. Long-armed players are a huge asset for defense of course. And a talented passer!! He looks a little bit like Metta World Peace. I like this guy. Put him in ahead of Payton right away Tom!! Toppin coming in at 1:15 hmmmm.

Period 2:
Forgot about Knox: MEH Is it me or does Sabonis have a rather wide skull? Toppin: MEH but he shows promise as a passer playmaker. The scoring will come and when it does then he'll be a good player. Never great unless he improves his D. Question: who has the most floor impact on the Knicks. Tonight it's Barrett, Quickly, and-- when available-- Mitch. Doug McDermott gets an amen from me. Looks solid. Another underrated player: TJ McConnell. I remember when he destroyed D'Angelo Russell in the NCAA 2015. Replays show RJ's shooting at the end of the 2nd-- sorry but that is not good form. His release is too forward and not high enough. I hope he can change it because this will limit him, especially in his midrange game. Like Clyde said in the 1st: he has to be able to stop and pop in the lane and this shot requires more fluidity in shoulder/elbow/wrist nuance.

Can I somehow purchase the old monty.python 16 ton block to drop on Quinn Buckner's head. One of the worst offensive players of all time. But somehow an even worse head coach. Now he's even more terrible as an announcer.

Q3:
The NY announcers of Breen/Frazier are singing Randle's praises for 8 assists on the night (8:18 Q3) but his floor impact is nonexistent-- we have less than a 5-point lead which is poison in the NBA. Quickley has a hip pointer. Yikes. Will he be injury-prone?? Payton sucks. Sorry fellas. I just don't see it. Bullock's hairdo is a rasta version of what Payton used to rock. WTF No Frank tonight. wow Toppin does not look NBA athletic to me. Just saw him next to Sabonis and he is dwarfed. Maybe 6'8". Not nearly as athletic as Stat either. I see a possible tweener-ish issue. I do like his passing but he doesn't loom like a stretch 4 to me. Maybe a point forward SF. Initial impression only. God help me but is Mitch a god-damned prima fricking donna? Please say no.

Q4:
8:41 A strong Knox finish over Sabonis. HE-llo Turner is definitely out of shape/chunky. Frank is playing his way into trade bait. Brogdon is so good. I don't see the fuss about Oladipo. Sabonis is a BEAST. Game over at 5:55 left in the 4th.

Quickley is the only NBA level point guard on the roster. As soon as he got hurt, we had trouble scoring. With him, we could have won that game. Without him, we are in the running for most losses.

I thought Randle played well, he moved the ball and didn’t dribble into double teams. RJ was terrific, too bad they forgot he was on the team in the second half. Rivers needs to return ASAP and Payton needs to leave the rotation. In order for Frank to be trade bait, someone would want to take him. Everyone thought he was Thibs type of player, but Thibs obviously has no use for him, so why would any coach? That being said, I’d play Frank and DSJ over Payton, he’s the worst. Sabonis killed them. Had them all playing tentative because of foul trouble. Burks had an excellent game too. A healthy Rivers and IQ and that’s a different game.

I only disagree with the Payton is the worst statement. I'd say he might be third worst. Frank is even worse and Smith likely is also worse. The best thing about Frank is that he doesn't hang with James Harden.

First of all to all who celebrate it Merry Christmas!!!
The first game of the season was obviously a tale of two halves. While I agree with DA that the IQ injury impacted this game I also think Randle getting into foul trouble was an equal contributing factor. I also think allowing 121 points is a bit of an issue too. The Knicks had no answer for Sabonis who scored and rebounded at will against the Knicks front line.
First the positives. With his play in pre season and this first game we are seeing a completely different RJ Barrett. We are seeing an alpha scorer who is also boarding, passing and defending. We also may see him doing most of his damage at SF because Alec Burks looks like the real deal at SG. These two were very impressive and Julius Randle finished one assist and one rebound away from a triple double. Reggie Bullock had a decent game. IQ gets an incomplete and Obi Toppin just needs reps. He hit 3 treys but that’s not his game. His game is a smooth low post skill set that includes turn around jumpers, moves to the rim and even hook shots coupled with a better than average midrange jumper. We didn’t see much of that but it will come.
Mitchell Robinson and Nerlens Noel were mostly ineffective against the Pacers tandem of Sabonis and Myles Turner. It should also be noted how well Malcolm Brogdon and Victor Oladipo played but mostly this game came down to Indiana’s ability to do what they wanted and New York’s inability to do the same in the second half. If you looked at the stats of that first half you knew the Knicks could not sustain a 50% 3 point shooting pace. A 16 point 3rd quarter did the Knicks in and Elfrid Payton’s complete inability to run the offense was a big reason why the Knicks were so futile. Frank Ntilikina had a forgettable 5 minutes. Kevin Knox wasn’t awful. He wasn’t much help either.
The bottom line though is giving up 121 points. Both teams ended up shooting decent but even with a 23.5% 3 point shooting percentage the Pacers put up 9 more shots and hit 49% of their shots from the field while out rebounding NY by 10. For the Knicks the emergence of Barrett is the big news. Burks is a player who I liked a while ago just like Reggie Bullock. Both are flexible shooters who can defend a bit. Neither is a great athlete but both are smart ballers.
Obviously PG is an issue. Payton was past awful. You would expect a veteran not to push things so much but virtually every time Elfrid had the ball he was out of control. It feels like his 5 turnovers could have easily been 10. IQ has a hip pointer. He could play Saturday. He could play in a month. That’s how hip pointers run but he’s young so I am hoping for a week. Yea, it’s looking like IQ should start.
The Knicks need Mitch and Nerlens to assert themselves. It still feels like one step forward and one step back but the kid is so talented as fans we have to be patient. Noel missed a bunch of point blank opportunities but let’s be serious. I didn’t expect to beat the Pacers. I would have liked a more competitive game but given the circumstances I’m not upset. Thibs will get them on the same page defensively and really for half a game it was a blast. The second half not so much...
As an addendum Domantas Sabonis is EXACTLY the kind of stretch big the Knicks need.

Excellent post. I ain't mad at out centers. Turner is way better than they are. And Sabonis is way way waaaaay better. I LOVED his game in college and he has really expanded his game since then. He got both centers in foul trouble in the first half. The Randle Obi combo was abused on defense and then Randle got in 2ND half foul trouble. Liked Burks last year and was curious about seeing him. Also liked how RJ was saying F U to the imbeciles that didn't have him as a top 10 rook. A couple of their top 10 choices can't play at all. Efficiency stats my ass. Some bum goes 1 for 2 every game and he's a baller? Please.

Some things to add to the discussion above..
Indiana kills the Knicks. They have beaten us about 90% of the time recently.
For Sabonis- He is allowed to rent space in the key area. And knock down pins on his way to the basket.
On the positive side RJ looks like he can get to the basket whenever he wants to. Burks is still the real deal and one of the best off-season pickups for the Knicks.
The Pacers shoot nearly 40 threes a night. That the Knicks were beating them at that in the first half was great but ultimately fools' gold. But that 3 point shooting alone improves the Knicks chances greatly versus other teams by opening up the key for Randle, RJ and others, like a PG.
The assists were 25 on 39 baskets for NYK. That's not bad but a key stat looking ahead.
We got beat outrebounded 50-40 and that was disturbing to me.
The combined Knicks PG assists were 4 versus 5 turnovers. Not a stat for any success. Next up- Bring on Rivers and D Smith and Harper.
