IQ (Immanuel Quickley) is getting a lot of love from the media and Knicks fandom. Somebody likened it to the start of Linsanity? Can the Knicks capture lightning in a bottle again?
First of all IQ (I just LOVE that new moniker!) is no clone of Jeremy Lin. He comes from an elite basketball school. He is a far better shooter. He’s a lot cooler in demeanor. Lin was always a worrier while IQ is as cool as the other side of the pillow. Both are driven, hard working guys who faced adversity in completely different manners. Lin was always convinced he’d never get a fair shot because he was an Asian American from Harvard. IQ was always confident in his ability even though he was not the highest recruited PG in his class. He was a 5 star kid and the #6 PG in his class but Kentucky classmate Ashton Hogans was a little higher in the rankings and in fact he was the Kentucky PG while IQ played SG.
Lin is stronger than IQ which helps against big NBA PGs. IQ is quicker (duh!!!) and overall a better athlete though hardly elite. As stated before he has some serious ball skills. I don’t think what we have seen in the pre-season from IQ is Fool’s Gold. The kid’s skills are real. The demeanor is genuine. He might not be as cool as Clyde but he is a very confident dude with his own particular brand of cool. It feels like IQ is already comfortable in the spotlight.
And IQ can shoot the trey. Before last night’s game I had a post here where I said if IQ takes better shots he will hit them. Then comes the Cleveland game and that is exactly what IQ does. He doesn’t rush things and virtually every shot he took was a good one. And he hit them. Again the qualifier has to be that IQ was playing against some bad defensive Cavs guards but he still hit open shots. Elfrid Payton has had wide open shots and not just missed them but badly missed them.
Linsanity was special because Lin was hardly the hero type and his star turn was so completely unexpected. Out of nowhere Lin emerged as a star but then again nobody expected the #25 pick in the draft to be this good, this fast either. It helps IQ tremendously that his competition at PG is so average. In fact Jared Harper could very well be the next best PG on the Knicks roster.
Should IQ start? Hell yeah!!! He’s practicing like he is playing and not to be overlooked in his gaudy stats from the Cleveland game are the 5 steals he had. He’s no worse than Payton on defense and maybe not as good as DSJ but offensively he is light years ahead of both.
Playing IQ is the smart move. I don’t think he will have the run of games Lin had but I think he will play well enough to keep his job, learn, grow and maybe be one of the star type players the Knicks need though frankly I’d be happy with good PG play. Star PG play remains a dream.
