Honestly I wish Obi would beat out Julius to start the season or rather maybe finishes those games while Randle sits. But I can't really answer this until I see what preseason looks like to be honest.

Position less Basketball 101. Get your 5 best players on the court. 😎
With that in mind it’s Mitch, Julius , Obi, RJ and a very, very interesting battle between Payton and Rivers. Austin didn’t sign with the Knicks to be a stinkin’ backup!!😎
As to Julius and Obi playing at the same time I tell you 2 things. This why we hired Tom and this is why we have defensive and extremely mobile centers and one of the best forward defenders in the game. 😎

BTW, I’m not too worried about our rookie forward playing defense as he tested off the charts athletically when tested at the Knicks facility. 😎

As Jason pointed out we have to see the preseason games first, but based on offseason and what I’ve been reading so far:
DSJ Rivers RJ Obi Mitch

Position-less basketball does not necessarily mean you put the five "best" players out there, whatever "best" means in a team game. If their skillsets don't match/mesh it's very hard to coach them into a unit. Again, how to you assess who is "best"? What statistical model would you use? Or are you relaying solely on the eye test, specifically your eye test? According to win shares, with your reasoning last year Fizdale should have had Mitch, Gibson, Randle, Portis, and Morris out there. VORP swaps in Payton for Gibson. The loathsome PER metric would have Mitch Randle Morris Gibson Payton. RJ Barrett doesn't come close on any of these metrics. Toppin is an unknown. Rivers has been a negative on both sides of the ball his entire career, especially on defense. And according to RPM that'd be Mitch, Frank, Randle, Morris, Dotson/Payton-- which actually correlates pretty well to a realistic scenario. And with your five best players where's the defense going to come from? Me it's the defense-first hub of any argument as to who starts, and that's have to be Frank as a ball stopper and Mitch as a rim protector. Then, even though his advanced numbers are awful, you put RJ Barrett out there, (1) for chemistry with Frank and (2) his presumptive improvement in strength and conditioning for defense and driving. You hold your nose with Randle but reduce his minutes from 32.5 to around 23-26MPG, the remaining minutes going to either Noel for defense or Toppin for offense. Basically platooning that 4th place. There's no 3-point shooter out there so the last position has to go to the best of the three-point shooters. So that's the only reason you go with Rivers. Positionless Basketball 101: Frank Rivers Barrett Mitch Randle/Toppin/Noel

Positionless Basketball 101: Frank Rivers Barrett Mitch Randle/Toppin/Noel To win you have to score more points than your opponent. 😎 That can be accomplished many different ways including plain out scoring more points. 😎 The Knicks need Julius because he can score and rebound. Historically he’s also an extremely efficient scorer too shooting almost 50% from the field for his career. I imagine he won’t have the same role as last season which means he can do what he does best. Obi should play because he can shoot which is the exact same rationale for Rivers starting over Payton and Frank. The Knicks need shooting. Shooting spreads the court and gives players room to do their thing. I like defense and when needed Frank, Nerlens and MKG are at your disposal. It’s really a very simple game. 😎

Imagine Mitch and Noel starting together against fast teams, what a disaster! And if Noel and Mitch play together, Noel is going to have to play 48 minutes on all those many nights Mitch gets into foul trouble. I know Thibs loves the defenders, but on this team he’ll have to make concessions, because the best defenders can’t score. I can see a lot of offense-defense shuffling down the stretch of close games though. And when we’re posting our lineups and rotations nobody has mentioned Reggie Bullock, who I think will play a lot, since he’s one of the few that plays defense AND can shoot.

I think one of the training camp battles will be between Bullock and Burks. Essentially they are the same player and since both can shoot AND defend one needs to separate from the other. As Mark says we need shooters but which shooters will get to shoot?😎

This is going to be tough for Thibs. Maybe the thread should be.... Who’s glued to the bench?

Honestly like I said I can't do starting lineups and the like yet but I have a feeling Jacob Evans and Iggy are probably getting cut. These two haven't been in highlights nor did interviews in media week this week. Just seems like Iggy is getting overlooked but he can shoot and defend the passing lanes. Like Dotson he most likely isn't coming back. And Evans shot is ugly and he's not playing over Knox and Bullock etc.
