I have to admit to a little disappointment at how things worked out as I expected the Knicks and Leo Rose to be major players in free agency. So far free agency has yielded Alec Burks which is hardly earth shattering. Fred Vanvleet is gone. So is Gordon Heyward. Christian Wood signed a very doable deal with Houston that NY could have easily surpassed. Davis Bertans, another Knicks target, went to Washington. Is Leo Rose up to the job of running the Knicks? Is it the same old story when it comes to free agency and the Knicks?
So far the news is the Knicks never met with Vanvleet feeling he was going to Toronto all along. They Heyward negotiations hung up on contract length. Rose never talked to Wood. Bertans went for way more money than he is worth. This new information changes my mood a bit. Rose still has plenty of options and plenty of money he can use in a trade. That’s good. Even the Burks deal could be slotted into a MLE deal and the Knicks still have plenty of cap flexibility moving forward.
I hear Rose may be interested in a 1 year deal with PG Jeff Teague as a guy who can help out the Knicks while they search for a more permanent solution. The Knicks still have all their draft picks plus picked up a few second rounders and they have a ton of room under the cap. I was hoping for a home run move but glad the Knicks didn’t settle or make a bad deal. That counts too.
The next week or so before training camp should be interesting. And revealing.

I would call up Raptors now that they got Van Fleet back and offer them the two KP picks for Malachi Flynn. He went on the 29th pick to them this year.

I like that we haven’t panicked. Let’s keep building assets, keeping space. We don’t need to spend big money on second and third level guys. We’ve waited this long. We need a Teague to steady the backcourt.

I like the prudence and the restraint-- so far.

To date there are those deals that the competitive teams make to cement its position. The Lakers did that. There are those willing to spend big to make at least incremental upgrades. Perhaps the Charlotte trade is one of those.
We aren't for sure in that top area but we should at this stage IMO avoid the high priced incremental change. So it means getting a team together that plays well together. An experienced but not necessarily earth-shifter PG is needed. The team did OK when Payton played but he couldn't carry the scoring load in the 4th. Get a passer who can give you these occasional points in the 4th quarter and build from there. I'm going to say something here I thought I would never say....get Lonzo (not Lamelo) Ball
We waited so long, maybe a little more wouldn't be the worst that has already happened.

Well said Gary. The Lakers have re-loaded, the Hornets imho, are clueless. We don’t even have a gun yet. Like the patience. I won’t kill Rose if he gets WB or Wall either.

What about Ricky Rubio? On a 2 year deal about 17 mil per. Still just 30 and would certainly help the young un’s develop.
