Random Pandemic Thoughts

This draft didn’t have too many head scratchers and I think most of it went according to script. I have to confess I completely forgot about the Quickley kid who had his career high against my Gators. Florida had some pretty good defensive guards too but this kid did what he wanted in a Wildcat win. Quickley is a definite candidate for draft sleeper. 

I’m getting a good vibe so far off our new management team. They stayed the course and still got the guy they wanted in Obi Toppin and obviously I think Quickley is special. I think the main reason the Knicks passed on an extension for Dotson was because they think Quickley can be what we hoped Trier and Dotson could be as a spark off the bench. I like the Davis deal. He’s a super smart, super efficient big though I think he hasn’t attempted a trey in his whole 10 ear career.  I love the fact we are now players in the free agent/trade markets and mostly I like the positive buzz the Knicks are now getting from the media. So far, so good. 

Tomorrow is going to be a big day for New York. Do they have a plan to become contenders this season? It seems to me we have a ton of options heading into free agency. I’m not sure I like all of them but I’m open to the possibilities.

After the whole Porzingis mess is it was good to see a Knick draftee genuinely excited to be a Knick and no little brat kid making faces over the choice.  Obi is coming home and I think if you watch his video you can’t be anything but excited. He might be the best offensive player in the draft and the Knicks need offense. Plus Obi always wanted to be a Knicks player. I’m happy for him but happier for us. I also like the idea he knows he needs improvement on defense and if anybody can help him it’s Thibodeau. 

Right now I’m cautiously optimistic about the Knicks. I feel pretty certain Julius Randle will get traded along wit DSJ and I’m super curious as to the return. I’m also hoping for huge sophomore improvement from RJ and Mitch. Toppin is an older player and I think he will get PT enough to show his stuff.  Knox is another enigma but Calipari is so positive he has star ability I haven’t given up hope yet. A front court of Mitch, Toppin and Knox is ridiculously long and athletic and if all of them can play to their potential they could be scary good. 

But the NBA is now a guards league and PG is still an issue and still the most important position. Let’s see what Rose and Company can do about solving that eternal problem.

I think Thibs having off season workouts was invaluable

Well said. Making the NBA a guards league is on the money. Outside of LeBron who is whatever position he wants to play, the big contracts are in the élite PGs pockets. You can't compete in this league without one. The position that has the ball most in their hands is the one that automatically has the most clout in this hands-off defense league.

The Knicks will look a lot better automatically with a player that can get the ball to teammates in good positions to shoot. The players we have will all look better with that position well manned. The Knicks need to get that for these guys. Quickley is a good shooter for SG but isn't that PG IMO. I am not sure that Westbrook can be that guy either.

I was watching a highlight reel of Obi and although I have no doubts his defense is awful, I saw a lot of video of him blocking shots and making steals, and last time I looked that’s part of defense, right? This kid is going to be a superstar and he’s got the right coach to teach him defense for sure. Gary is right, we need that point guard, and according to Macri and Woj it’s probably not going to be Westbrook. They seem focused right now on Heyward, and while you wonder why, just remember it’s smart to focus on the ones you have a chance of signing, instead of frantically calling AD and begging for a meeting. Free agency starts today at 6pm and I think we’ll be agressive and smart. To quote the great philosopher Bart Scott, “can’t wait!”

Imagine AD changes mind and does a Kentucky memory tour with us.The new staff I think will attract alot of new players here,what a change.Obi does real good with help defense like Stat did it's the one on one and pick and roll defense he needs to get better.The thing I look at is determination and if he trys if he does he will get better on dee and after watching him I think he is a high character kid and will try hard to get better.That is the key on defense is effort and the right training for position.
