First the roster and keeping in mind some of these guys won’t be on the final roster.
Front court: Mitchell Robinson, Julius Randle, Kevin Knox, Taj Gibson, Maurice Harkless, Ignas Brazdeikis, Kenny Wooten, Obi Toppin and Daniel Oturu.
Backcourt: RJ Barrett, Reggie Bullock, Elfrid Payton, Wayne Ellington, Dennis Smith, Jr., Frank Ntilikina, Damyean Dotson, Jared Harper, Theo Pinson, and Immanuel Quickley.
On Friday we should find out which team option players stay or go. I thought Portis was gone but he’s popular and still needed. Wooten may be outside looking in and I feel sure Wayne Ellington is gone. I think Taj still has a role too. Smith is certainly gone. I think Harper and Pinson are auditioning for one spot on the team. I think Harper has the edge.
I think free agency is not a concern for us. The only guy maybe on the Knicks radar was Christian Wood and I think taking Toppin and Oturu in the draft maybe makes Wood a luxury item though if you ask me I’d rather have Wood than Portis.
I like the Quickley kid but to help the Knicks he has to develop PG skills. He’s an outstanding shooter and the draft certainly provided the Knicks with shooters. But the new Big Dog is Obi Toppin. Certainly Obi is an outstanding physical talent with myriad scoring skills. He’s a hybrid forward so I guess Randle and Knox are on notice. I think Obi is more a SF but he certainly can play either position. I like the Stoudemire comparisons though Obi is a better shooter and ball handler coming into the league.
Too many pundits mentioned the lateral quickness issue for it not to have merit. Two things to remember. Tom Thibodeau and Mitchell Robinson. Plus Toppin would not be the first NBA player who was a much better scorer than defender. Y’all recall Melo? Toppin puts a lot of pressure on Knox and Randle but I honestly think Knox is more at risk than Randle.
All in all I’m happy. The knicks got a potential future star player and they got two talented kids who could make the rotation. The Knicks next moves might be picking up excess salary from other teams in exchange for young talent or picks. I’d call Sacramento and see what they might want for Halliburton. I know. I’m greedy.
