In case we don't land LeBron, Wade or Bosh next summer Plan B and C is...
Carmelo Anthony and Kevin Durant in 2011 and Chris Paul and Deron Williams in 2011. We might have to wait a year or two to get star quality player but it also gives us time to get our cap even lower and to develop what we have right now.
I know, it's crap. ; ) I want LeBron too but realistically we have to plan ahead and Walsh is doing that right now.

Plan B

Post by jbnewyork162 on Jul 19, 2009 13:11:11 GMT -5
I say go for Brandon Roy(most def) if Lebron wastes our whole summer tooling with us and Bosh(unless Amare or Dirk(dont like him but his offense i do) will take 13 mil or less instead of asking for 17 mil or something Lebron like). And leave cap room for Deron or Paul next year. I would say that Carmelo might sign here because his fiance' lived and grew up here(LALA) and he won a national title here so that would be a bonus whether Lebron came or not in 2010.
So check it. make room for Brandon Roy in 2010. Make room for Carmelo Anthony in 2011. and then make room for either Deron Williams who isnt being surrounded by championship players in utah or chris Paul who might have that same issue with the underachieving Hornets in 2012.
Simple. Add a superstar a year and sign a savvy yet cheap vet in eacch of those summers. for example, let's say if Nash doesnt sign an extension soon and this summer. Next summer sign Roy(big signing) and Steve Nash(low cost vet). In 2011 sign Carmelo Anthony(big signing) and check on Chauncey billups(maybe a low cost vet/mid cost vet). In 2012, go for a low either D Williams or Chris Paul(high cost signing) and couple him with Stephon curry(will be restricted free agent by then or even Blake griffin(who could depending on our cap number(be a second mis tier/high cost signing) as an restricted free agent. Even Dwight Howard has an opt out in 2012, so he fits in with this wait and see approach of staying relevant in deals and/or building a dynasty eventually with or without Lebron James.
You could build a winner based upon not putting all your ducks in the Lebron James row.

Good points. Roy is a star player. He's not LeBron or Wade but to me he is equal with Bosh, Melo and Durant. Put Roy together with Durant and you have a very solid star tandem. Now fill in with the right pieces around them and we are competitive. W may have some of those pieces now.

See, now here is a prime example of thinking out of the box. Get one elite FA next year and, barring Curry or Jeffries being traded this season, their contracts drop off the cap the following year, and we can still get another elite FA or RFA.
2010-2011 is a vital year, but if NY cannot get LeBron plus Bosh or Wade, than there is nothing wrong with the plan of waiting another season. We may end up with a better compliment of players for the long haul...

Brandon Roy is going to get max money. The only possible reason that he has not gotten that money yet is that Portland still wants to trade or sign another player first and if they wait until next year, a lower cap means a lower max contract.

Ken Just so you know the whole Plan B thing came from RealGM so the out of box thinking isn't mine. The out of mind thinking is. ; ) Ah, but Bill, you are too modest ; ) When it comes right down to it, RealGM is simply saying that the Knicks do not have to reconstruct Rome in a day. Give it two days, and whilst I am one with little impulse control, Alan Hahn (NY Newsday) basically is saying the same, although he believes that LeBron will be a Knick next season based on; 1) Cleveland's failure to lure Ron Artest or Trevor Arizor to their arena 2) The breakdown of the Cleveland Cavalier's aging squad. 3) Bringing in Shaq, which on paper, looks like a grand move, but on the court, limits James' creativity in the offense, as O'Neal's favorite place to park his fat ass is in the paint. 4) The coaching turmoil which exists in Cleveland coupled with Mike D'Antoni being LeBron's favorite coach in the NBA. Plan B is to focus on the King in 2010. The following year, James as well as the rest of the NBA, will know that the Knicks are poised for another run at another elite FA and will have the money to do just that. Walsh tries to dump Jeffries' and Curry's deals; however, they both come off the cap in 2012. Donnie than strikes like a King Cobra and steals a young player who has had a full two years of professional game experience or more to be able to fill the role of LeBron's "Pippen".

I don't have the numbers exactly but some quick HoopsHype salary cap math shows that if we sign Wilson Chandler to a one year qualifying deal in 2011 (and then sign him longterm the next summer) even with LeBron and 2 MLE's this year and next year we could be under the cap enough to offer a 2011 unrestricted free agent a max deal. The 2 big names there are Melo and Kevin Durant. There is even a chance Bosh or Wade, 2 close friends of James, don't exercise their player options and become unrestricted free agents in 2011.
LeBron gets his Pippen and we get a dynasty.

Thinking out of the box, is really how we can reverse the phase of the media knowing everything we want to do before we do it. I used to think it ironic that sometimes, Alan Hahn of Newsday used to report things in his blog or main article that we used to talk about on the old AOL board. I think he may have been a closet AOL member for awhile or whatever in the past but....... i said all that to say most clever things when it comes to our team, ar plastered all over ESPN, the NY tabloids, etc. and you didnt know that LA made an offer to Artest before it happened. miami and Portland has cap room nexxt season too and you barely hear what they are going to do except doing due dillegence on supposed players they want.
LA, Miami and Boston are major cities too but we never hear what they are going to be until it happens. Thinking out of the box for a change, will keep teams who thought they knew we wanted to wait on Lebron and instead go after Wade and Portland would be crushed if we stole their future in Roy or for cheaper Aldridge who's also restricted.
Fill in the blank with whomever your favorite player is but i hate how someone in the Knicks organization keeps leaking info and all other 29 teams know whom we are going to talk to. its like looking into a crystal ball with the foresight and hindsight buttons on the table of every GM's desk and all Walsh can talk about is 2010 and not about the next two years after that.

I like all these plans and may I add it's nice to have one , DW is doing fine so far,I like Darko and he's playing a nice waiting game with Lee if we sign Lee cheap(6.5 per) it would be a great job.We tried to steal a couple of vets but DW has a plan and like you guys stated their a B,C options that are worth while but Lebron is the beacon,we get Lebron and all future plans work better.

Walsh is a wise and experienced executive. I have an idea he leaks just what he wants the media and his competitors to know. The man has a plan. I know that revelation is so shocking to Knick fans who have seen the last decade unfold like a bad dream but I trust the guy.
For now. ; )
