Unlike most free agent days involving the Knicks this seasons free agent bazaar should be epic.
Or not.
If the Knicks do very little in free agency tonight and the days that follow it just reinforces the theory they are waiting till next year to make franchise changing type moves.
So where do we stand right now? There is no clue from Knicks management which isn't a big surprise. There are reports they are seriously looking to trade for Terrence Ross and not a whisper about Colin Sexton.
Sexton is a lock.
Right now any thoughts about Chris Paul and Kawhi Leonard TOGETHER in Gotham are ridiculous. They will get big new contracts with their current teams. Money talks. The other veteran PG the Knicks like is Kyle Lowry who has been linked to Miami, Dallas, New Orleans and Philadelphia.
Classic misdirection!! Say hello to our newest Knick!!
There is a rumor the Bulls are kicking the tires on Derrick Rose. The Bulls want Lonzo Ball and apparently he wants them. Chicago can either get Ball or Rose. Not both. The Knicks will keep Rose.
I got a tip for y'all that will make today easier. Disregard any Knicks rumors. Leon Rose works in the shadows so we won't know what is coming till it happens. If the draft taught us anything Rose and his management buddies know how to maneuver the treacherous waters of player acquisition. It has been said he would have taken Grimes and McBride with picks 19 and 21 and instead got them with picks 25 and 36.
That said here are the possible scenarios.
1) Nothing happens at all save re-signing some of our guys and overpaying for a year of a player like Cameron Payne. This means NEXT summer is when we get all the fireworks. It also means saving money and assets for a big trade between now and February.
2) The Knicks stay the course signing or trading for young players like Colin Sexton and Kelly Oubre, There may be some renewed interest in Dennis Schroder but I personally hope not. I'm just not a fan of Dennis and personally I think any character issues with Schroder are well founded while the same issues with Sexton might be youth and intensity. I just think Colin is a better fit in NY.
3) The Knicks go all in which means players like Lowry and DeRozan might be in though I still doubt Chris Paul or Kawhi Leonard move from their current teams. Paul's kids are in school in LA and Kawhi always wanted to play on the West Coast. I can't see him moving East and frankly while he is one of the game's best players he is a massive head case. No thanks. But DeRozan re-uniting with his buddy Kyle Lowry? It could happen and it certainly addresses issues at PG, SF and with scoring.
My eternal question about any win now moves this summer is will this move, DeRozan and Kyle, get the Knicks past the second round in the playoffs. Does THIS move put the Knicks on par with Milwaukee, Philly and Brooklyn? No need to beat y'all to death with my opinion here.
4) The half and half approach. The Knicks still trade for a young PG but also add a veteran like Evan Fornier who has gotten a LOT of interest in the press as a potential target for the Knicks. I had an opportunity to watch Fornier a lot and to me he is a less defensive minded Alec Burks. I'd rather keep Burks whose offensive numbers are similar to Fornier but he also adds defense and rebounding. Evan is a good player but he's not the consistent offensive player the Knicks need.
Keep out an eye on Zach LaVine. He and Chicago will negotiate an extension but he keeps using the "RESPECT" word which means there might be some issues there that a team with resources like NY might be able to get involved.
The Knicks might also try to blitz the restricted free agent market. Let's say they make ridiculous offers for Ball or Robinson or they get involved in a sign and trade situation that nets the Knicks a player like LaVine and trade back Ball and change.
One thing to keep in mind tonight is that money is a huge issue. Every NBA team was swimming in the red for the last 2 seasons so some deals that don't make sense happen simply because the money works.
I haven't mentioned Mike Conley. I won't be now.
How about Myles Turner? The fact there is a rumor about Myles Turner means he isn't being traded to the Knicks But if the Knicks are having issues with Mitch there might be some traction here though Myles missed a lot of games this season (25) so that bears some extra consideration if there is any basis in this rumor. Which I doubt.
My hope for this off season hasn't changed much. Colin Sexton via trade and Kelly Oubre via free agency. Keeps the Knicks young while adding scoring and athleticism. Keep Derrick, Taj, and hopefully Alec. Find a back up center/PF especially if Obi is used to get Sexton.
We shall see.
