I know how Hallmark has made showing Christmas movies in July a "thing" but to me this week is Christmas week with the NBA draft a week away and then free agency starting 4 days later on August 2nd at 6PM. Normally you have a month between the draft and free agency but this year that window is compressed as will be the trades that inevitably happen during this period.
What makes it all so exciting is that the Knicks have a massive amount of options. They have 3 picks in the first 32 picks of the draft and this draft has a lot of potential rotation type players in it. The Knicks have money to spend on free agents. The Knicks have assets they can use to trade. Even more incredible is they can do ALL these things with an eye towards the future and adding assets and most of all talent.
Here are just some of the options available to the Knicks.
Keep their own picks and re-sign most of their free agents. Obviously they won't keep Elfrid Payton or Frank. This is the vegan option. 100% organic and 100% not going to help them in the near future.
The Knicks could also move up in the draft with any number of players targeted. The two you hear the most about are James Bouknight and Trey Murphy. I like both of them though as noted in another thread I'm a fan of Usman Garuba too.
Free agency offers some interesting choices too. SG/SF Norman Powell just declined his option. Kelly Oubre is out there as is Kyle Lowry, Mike Conley, DeMar DeRozan, and Spencer Dinwiddie amongst others are available. Restricted free agents like Lonzo Ball, Duncan Robinson, Gary Trent, Jr. Lauri Markkanen, and Devontae Graham are out there too though the Knicks might have to over pay for one of them. WAY overpay!
Then there are trades with Colin Sexton and Damian Lillard being the players mainly connected to the Knicks.
In other words the NBA buffet table is full for the Knicks.
Personally I trade one 2021 pick with a 2023 pick to move up and get Murphy while keeping our #19 to get Garuba. That's Column A. From Column B I add Derick Rose, Alec Burks and Kelly Oubre as free agents. Finally I trade Knox, Obi and a package of picks including our second round picks this draft and the Dallas pick in 2023 for Colin Sexton. That's Column C.
I pass on older players. I build towards a future based around what we have and some of the youngsters we could get. Sexton is 22. Murphy is 21 and Garuba is 19. Kelly Oubre is just 25.
Any special Christmas presents y'all want?
