Similarities in IQ and Trae Young

As I'm watching the NBA playoffs and watch the (very annoying yet very talented) Trae Young, IQ comes to mind. Why, both have tremendous 3 point range, both have a terrific runner in the lane shot. Both are very competitive and like the pressure situations.

I bring these points up because everyone says the Knicks need a great point guard. While Dame or Beal would be sweet, it would also deplete our team. I believe IQ can be every bit as good and possibly better than Trae Young. With that said, my focus would be on trying to obtain Zack Lavine. I see RJ more as a 3 than 2 and Lavine gives us an electric, uber athletic player who scores in bunches, which we desparately need.

I know bench scoring is very important, however provided we keep Burks and Rose, they provide the guard punch off the bench. The need then would be bench scoring from the wing and power forward positions. There are some good options in free-agency such as Montrezl Harrell from LA. He would add energy, scoring and toughness off the bench. Oubre could be a free-agent option as well, provided he can be convinced to be a 6th man. I think balance from the starting unit and bench is equally as important as having one superstar player.

In my opinion, this is a crucial year for Mitchell Robinson. This is the year I believe where he either takes a major leap forward, or will be valuable trade bait in 2022. Hopefully Mitch develops an offensive game besides dunks and rounds out as a terrific 5 for the Knicks.

Excellent post. Totally agree about the IQ and Trae similarities. And  IQ is a better defender.  But the major difference is that Trae is an exceptional passer while IQ doesn't even see the floor.

Gates makes a great point and that’s why IQ gets ten minutes a night when his shot isn’t falling. And that difference between the two of them is the difference between being a superstar and being one of those “microwaves” off the bench. IQ’s future is not Trae Young, it’s Sweet Lou Williams and there’s nothing wrong with that.

IQ also just finished a rookie campaign and Trae has been in the league for a few years lol. Trae JUST NOW took it to the next level and became a superstar. I can't wait to see with opportunity what IQ becomes.

The Lou Williams comparison may be the most appropriate though.

I love IQ and I greatly admire Trae Young but I would be shocked (pleasantly of course) if IQ came anywhere near what Trae Young is now and will become in the future. Trae and IQ are the same age but Young has been in the league three years already and he had a much greater impact his rookie year than IQ. Trae was the runner-up to Doncic for ROY in 2019 and first team NBA all rookie team. His ball handling and sheer athleticism put quite a distance between his game and IQ's. Of course IQ can get better but so can Young and Young already displays that killer attitude all great scorers must have to succeed. IQ has a ways to go to reach the Trae Young plateau.

My comparison is more offensively based, with their 3 point shooting range and that terrific runner shot. Time will tell regarding impact, as both players are young.

Q can’t pass- Trae can. Q gets pulled after two misses. Thibs can get his team to play D, but he’s not adaptable on the O. No pick and rolls , he would have loved Melo.

Thibs used Rose and Burks in pick and rolls. IQ did it successfully a few times but not many. He is rudimentary at hitting the roll man and currently has poor timing on pick and pops.

Shooting is very close especially freethrows,but Tre dishes better in the lane which opens his game more.I can see IQ eventually having better three point range numbers than Tre.
